We’re going to talk now about a cushion cut diamond, which happens to be my absolute favorite cut of all stones. The cushion cut, it’s a modified brilliant cut. It’s in the brilliant cut family, but it’s modified, because the facets are a little bit larger and chunkier, so it reflects the light a little bit differently. It’s more of an antique look, because cushion cuts go back 200 years, when diamonds were cut by candlelight. They’re sometimes referred to as old mine cuts. And just as the name says, cushions, they’re like a pillow shape. It’s not round. It’s not square. It’s just sort of in the middle.

So it has this nice, pretty, soft shape. Some can be shorter and more square, little fat cushions. Some are a bit longer and more rectangular-shaped. It’s really just about personal preference. If you’re looking for a brilliant cut but you want something a little bit different, a cushion cut is a beautiful option, because of the way it reflects the light. And it gives it more an of antique or a vintage look, if that’s something to appeal to you.

The reason I love the cushion cut, not only because of the antique look, but because of the reason it’s not quite square, it’s not quite round. It’s just sort of in the middle. Cushion cuts also, though, tend to look a little bit smaller, because a lot of the weight’s in the belly of the stone.

So if price is important to you, then cushion cut may not be the best option, because they do look a little bit smaller than rounds. But if you’re in love with the shape, you can’t go wrong, and you can always put a little diamond halo setting around it to make the stone really pop and look bigger. So this is the cushion cut, my absolute favorite.
